Dementia Literacy in CALD Communities

The dementia knowledge and beliefs of persons from different ethnic backgrounds (Italian, Greek and Chinese) are being compared to third generation Australians. Five hundred persons from each group are being randomly selected from around Australia to be surveyed by telephone by the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre (project leader - Dr Lee-Fay Low) . Questions assess whether dementia symptoms are recognised, what these persons think causes dementia, where they would go for help, how likely they are to use aged care services and stigma towards persons with dementia. After the telephone survey, focus groups will be conducted to refine survey content and identify barriers to service use and methods to improve dementia knowledge.
