Promoting consumer participation in mental health research: A National Workshop

Date: 15 June 2004

The National Workshop was organised by the Depression & Anxiety Consumer Research Unit of the ANU Centre for Mental Health Research in consultation with the Mental Health Council of Australia, beyondblue/bluevoices and the National Health and Medical Research Council. The workshop was funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, and brought together 30 delegates with extensive experience in the area of mental health research and active consumer participation. A diverse range of mental health research stakeholders shared experiences from consumer, carer, academic, government, CALD, Aboriginal, funding body, NGO and pharmaceutical company perspectives.

The productive day-long workshop was facilitated by Dr Norman Swan. Delegates heard from different stakeholders and then broke into groups to draft a set of principles to guide active consumer/researcher partnerships for mental health research. A working group is now finalising the drafts, to be presented to consumer representative organisations and professional societies with an interest in mental health research. This is with a view to flagging them for the attention of the National Health and Medical Research Council, in order to encourage greater consumer participation in mental health research.
